Good afternoon Lincoln Lion parents and guardians,
This morning, we received questions about rumors following an investigation at Lincoln Friday afternoon and reports this morning from parents whose children attend the Boys and Girls Club located next to Lincoln.
To be clear, we investigated a concern following a report of a possible threat regarding a young female student who felt a few other students were mistreating her. As we take all reports seriously, the administration and Nogales Police Department collaborated to investigate the allegations of a threat thoroughly. However, it was determined that there was no credible threat, and the matter became a disciplinary issue to address student behavior.
However, some students who attend the Boys and Girls Club’s afterschool program initiated rumors that a weapon was present on campus and that the student also had drugs. After speaking with the parents who reported the Boys and Girls Club issue, we not only met with Nogales Police Department officials today but also spoke with Mr. German Celaya, the Director of the Boys and Girls Club. These rumors were not only highly inappropriate but were also proven to be untrue. However, understandably, this did create a great deal of alarm.
Although it was determined in both cases that there was no credible threat, because we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment, we asked, and the Nogales Police Department has agreed, to have an increased presence on and about campus this week and a couple of days after the break. Their presence is intended to reassure students who may have become concerned at the school or the Boys and Girls Club.
We appreciate the parents who reported their concerns and took the time to discuss ways we can support our students' feeling comfortable and safe at school. If a child is still nervous and a parent would like their child to see the school counselor, they are welcome to call the school at (520) 287-0870 or contact the district office to make arrangements.
Thank you very much for your understanding and support–
Ms. Saralee Burkett, Lincoln Elementary Principal
