Four Nogales High School students were honored at the Feb. 11, 2020 governing board meeting held at NHS before a packed crowd of admirers.

Supt. Fernando Parra said that traditionally, just one student is honored at a governing board meeting, but there were so many worthy students at NHS, four were selected this month. The students were valedictorian Francisco Javier Sauceda, salutatorian Jesus Ernesto Robles, Jr., an outstanding students Jorge Armenta, and Fernando Valenzuela.

While each student has unique qualities, they share some commonalities, including excellent academic achievements, memberships in honor societies, involvement in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, and plans for college to further their goals.

“These students are bilingual and bi-literate and are very well rounded. They represent all the academic and extracurricular programs NUSD and NHS have to offer,” Parra said before reading the following descriptions that NHS Principal Cesar Miranda had prepared about their accomplishments:

Sauceda plans on attending Georgetown University where he would like to major in Culture and Global Politics with an ultimate goal of one day becoming an ambassador. He is an International Baccalaureate candidate and a member of the National Honor Society, Honors Club, and Air Force JrROTC.

Robles said he may attend the University of Arizona but is keeping his options open for an out-of-state college offer. He plans on majoring in engineering and is a member of the National Honors Society, Technical Honors Society, Science National Honor Society, Z Club, Interact, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

Armenta is currently ranked sixth in his class and plans on attending Stanford University where he will major in Management Science and Engineering. He is an IB candidate, president of FBLA, parliamentarian for the Interact Club, and a member of the National Technical Honor Society and National Honor Society. He also helps eight-year-olds with softball.

Valenzuela is currently a junior at NHS.  He is a member of the Air Force JrROTC and is interested in criminal justice with the goal of becoming a police officer. He volunteers on campus with the security officers, helping direct traffic and working at sporting events as part of his Senior Project community hours.
