Nogales Unified to offer free summer school classes

To address learning loss associated with the school closure last year in March and any impact this school year due to the COVID-19, Nogales Unified School District will be offering free summer school at all schools this summer.

Assistant Supt. Angel Canto said both Nogales High School and Pierson High School would offer online summer school classes from May 24, through June 24, 2021, for students currently enrolled in grades 8 through 12. These classes include offerings for students who would like to take physical education online as well as for those who would like to take classes for credit recovery to get back on track for the 2021-2022 school year. Additionally, incoming eighth-grade students who would benefit from participation in a Transition to Algebra program for elective credit will also be able to do so. Online classes will run from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, with no classes on Memorial Day, May 31.

Canto added that free classes will be offered at both Desert Shadows Middle School and Wade Carpenter Middle School for students currently enrolled in grades 6 and 7. This program will begin May 24 and run through June 17, 2021, from 7:30 am through 1:00 pm.

“The focus of the program will be on English Language Arts and mathematics to address learning loss in these content areas and prepare students for the next school year. Both schools are identifying students who would benefit from participation and will be reaching out to parents over the next week or two to notify them of this opportunity.  Assuming that the percentage of COVID-19 infection permits, these classes will be offered in person, with both transportation and with free breakfast and lunch provided to students,” Canto said

At the elementary level, free summer school classes will also be available at all six NUSD elementary schools for students currently enrolled in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. These classes will begin May 24 and end on June 17, 2021, and will run from 8:00 am through 1:30 pm.  Similar to the middle school, assuming local conditions continue to permit in-person classes, bus transportation to and from school will be provided for those students who are normally eligible for the bus. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided for all students.

“The focus of elementary summer school will also be to address learning loss suffered by students as evidenced by grades and benchmark assessments and will provide an opportunity to revisit areas of challenge and prepare students for the next school year. Elementary schools will be contacting parents of students who would benefit from summer school to confirm their attendance,” Canto added.

Parents of kindergarten through 12th grade who are interested in these summer school programs or have questions are encouraged to contact their child's school for more information.
