Middle-school cheer and stunt girls honored at governing board meeting
Nogales Unified School District Superintendent named Wade Carpenter sixth grader Nayeli Lopez as February’s Outstanding Student Award winner at the governing board meeting Feb. 24, 2020.

Lopez won the State Cheer Solo award for middle school at the February 7, 2020 competition in Phoenix. The entire Wade Carpenter Middle School All Girls Stunt and Cheer Team captured first place at the same competition under the direction of first-year coach Johanna Lopez.

Parra said he selected Lopez for the student award because she was an excellent example of a student-athlete and a role model for not only her teammates, but also for the student body at Carpenter.

“I was told she never missed a practice,” Parra added. “She is small, but carries herself well,” he said of the petite athlete who is also on the girls’ basketball team.

In addition to the recognition given to the Carpenter team, Parra and the governing board recognized the Desert Shadows Pom Team who won the state championship in their division under the direction of Coach Amy Bader. Videos of Lopez’s solo performance, and both the Carpenter and Desert Shadows winning performances were shown at the governing board meeting.
