Board honored

The Nogales Unified School District governing board received its second recognition at the board meeting Jan. 14, 2019, earning the Total Board Award, presented by Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) Past President Linda Lyon.

This award is given to school boards when all five members have completed professional development hours and trainings.  The members included in the award were Barbara Mendoza, Manuel Ruiz, Greg Lucero, Santiny Orozco, and Dr. Marcelino Varona, Jr.

This award comes on top of the board earning the highest achievement from ASBA, the Lou Ella Kleinz Excellence in Governance Award which was presented at the association’s annual conference Dec. 14, 2018.

Lyon complimented the governing board on its achievement in capturing both awards.  In addition to a large award which joined the previous honor at a table in front of the board platform, each individual member was given a plaque.

The award ceremony for the board came directly after the election of Ruiz as the new board president, replacing Barbara Mendoza in that role, and the election of Varona as clerk.  Member Robert Rojas, who won a seat on the board in the recent election, was welcomed.

Rojas thanked the board and District administrators for making him feel welcomed and for helping him transition into his board seat.
