Nogales Unified School District honored music teacher Hanna Milner and Pierson High School student Delia Atondo at its governing board meeting Dec. 10, 2018.

Milner, the daughter of long time music educator Fred Milner and a graduate of Nogales High School, is in her second year as a teacher at Wade Carpenter Middle School.  Supt. Fernando Parra highlighted her “humble” nature and ability to work well with the students, noting that Milner has made great improvements in her teaching in just a short time.

“Her leadership has resulted in increasing the number of students in the music program to three times its previous number,” Parra said.

WCMS Principal Dr. Roman Soltero highlighted Milner’s ability to be a role model for the students, noting, “She’s good. She’s very good,” in relating to the students and sharing her musical abilities.

Milner credited her father, NUSD music coordinator William Weed and other music educators in the District, as well as the WCMS administration for her growth as a teacher.

The student recognized at the meeting was senior Delia Atondo. She is slated to graduate in December and then attend Pima Community College, but her path to success was more challenging than most, Supt Parra said.

Atondo has experienced major health issues and is still taking powerful medications. She told the board and audience that she made a decision not to let her illness stop her in her goals and to “always be strong.”

“When I go to school, and when I work, it distracts me,” Atondo said. “It’s been hard, but I know I can do it.”
