Vanessa Alegria-Rivas, the reading specialist at Lincoln Elementary School, was selected as the first educator to be honored at the Nogales Unified School District governing board meeting for this year.

Alegria-Rivas is no stranger to such recognitions. She was honored as the Arizona Rural Teacher of the year and was selected to be the guest speaker at the Pierson Vocational High School graduation ceremony in May, and has been garnering recognitions at Lincoln since she joined that site.

“Ms. Alegria-Rivas is well deserving of this honor,” Supt. Fernando Parra said at the governing board meeting Sept. 11, 2017. “She is a role model for students the students with whom she works. She is committed to NUSD and demonstrates initiative, pride, and dedication.”

Dr. Lucina Romero, principal at Lincoln, added in remarks read by Parra that Alegria-Rivas displays a positive attitude, is “very very loyal” and is highly dependable.

NUSD started the tradition of honoring an outstanding educator at a governing board meeting last year. Supt. Parra said he began the practice in order to recognize those educators who “go above and beyond” in their duties.
