Lizyvette Lopez, a fourth grade teacher at Mary L. Welty Elementary School, was the latest Nogales Unified School District educator to be honored at a governing board meeting for outstanding service.
Lopez has been named Teacher of the Year at Welty, is sponsor of reading and coding clubs at the school, and is currently mentoring a student teacher. Supt. Fernando Parra praised her commitment to the District, something he said was evident from her first days of student teaching here herself.
A graduate of Nogales High School, Lopez has deep ties to the district through her father, Alfredo Lopez, who has been a maintenance worker there for more than 40 years. Board member Marcelino Varona, Jr. said Lopez can trace much of her success to the parenting she received from Alfredo and Margarita Lopez.
Lopez thanked the District for providing her the skills necessary to succeed and said she was very happy to be working in the district where she earned her own education.
